Plays & Screenplays

In 1998, Jenn's play Scrapple was produced by the Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York City as part of the Marathon, EST's annual festival of new short plays. Scrapple was also published by Smith and Kraus in the EST Marathon 1998 anthology.

Since then, Jenn's plays have received staged readings and productions in many cities across the U.S., including New York, Philadelphia, Providence, Indianapolis, and Los Angeles. Recent productions include Curtains, which premiered at Moving Arts Theatre in Los Angeles in September 2004, and the full-length Like Home, which premiered at Main Street Stage in North Adams, MA, in 2006.

In 2006, Curtains was optioned by L.A.'s Vuela Alto Films and made into a short film of the same name. The film is currently making the rounds of festivals, both here in the U.S. and abroad. For more information on venues, visit Vuela Alto Films.

Jenn has been a guest lecturer in playwriting at Inkberry of the Berkshires, La Salle University in Philadelphia, and at the Teachers & Writers Collaborative in New York City (with playwright Tina Howe and others).

Scrapple Review:

“New York-based Ensemble Studio Theatre’s annual one-act marathon has become one of the last venues for professionally produced one-acts.

The most moving play in the anthology, Scrapple, about a father and daughter talking in the middle of the night, was written by a sometime actor, sometime playwright struggling in New York City, Jennifer Mattern.” —Booklist
